The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is responsible for administering federal income taxes. The federal agency collects an average of three trillion dollars annually and provides approximately 96% of the financial resources the federal government needs. It processed more than 240 million tax returns and tax forms during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2020, compared to 253 million in the previous fiscal year. Personal income tax returns and payroll tax returns accounted for 90% of all returns and forms filed during that period.
With over 157 million tax returns filed, personal income tax returns accounted for approximately two out of every three returns filed and submitted during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2020. By comparison, only eleven million corporate income tax returns were filed during that same fiscal year. This represents 5% of all returns and forms filed.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) collected approximately $3.5 trillion in federal income tax from individuals and businesses. Personal income tax and payroll taxes accounted for $3.1 trillion (88%) of the $3.5 trillion the IRS collected during that fiscal year.
- Individuals contributed $1.9 trillion to the federal treasury, more than half of the $3.5 trillion total.
- Businesses contributed $264 billion to the federal treasury in the form of taxes, and
- Individuals and businesses paid $1.3 trillion in payroll taxes.
Of the $3.5 trillion in taxes collected during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2020, the federal tax administration issued refunds of $736 billion.
Personal income tax returns are typically filed between January and April. The Federal Tax Administration announced January 24, 2022, as the opening date for filing 2021 income tax returns. We provide information on the main tax deadlines for 2022.
January 15, 2022: Self-employed workers, micro-entrepreneurs, and partners in companies subject to income tax must pay the fourth installment for income tax 2021.
January 31, 2022: Employers must provide their employees with a copy of the federal W-2 form and file a copy with the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA). If your organization uses a payroll processing company, they should handle these formalities for you.
Your organization is also required to report to the federal tax authorities (IRS), using form 1099-MISC NEC, the amount of fees paid to certain service providers. A copy of form 1099-MISC NEC must be provided to the service provider no later than this date.
February 28, 2022: Deadline for filing w-2 and 1099-MISC NEC declarations for organizations that have requested an extension to subscribe and file them.
March 15, 2022: Deadline for filing income tax returns for Partnerships, tax form 1065, and S Corporations, tax form 1120-S, whose fiscal year ends on December 31.
April 18, 2022: Deadline for filing personal income tax returns, using tax forms 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR as applicable. This year, the filing deadline is April 18 instead of April 15 because April 15 is a federal holiday in Washington, D.C., even if you don’t live there.
Companies subject to corporation tax, self-employed individuals, independent workers, and partners in partnerships subject to income tax must pay their first income tax installment for 2022.
Companies subject to corporation tax with a financial year ending December 31 must file and submit their corporation tax returns.
April 19, 2022: Deadline for filing personal income tax returns, using Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR as applicable, if you reside in Maine or Massachusetts. The deadline is April 19 instead of April 15 because April 15 is a statutory holiday in Washington, D.C., and April 18 is a statutory holiday in Maine and Massachusetts.
June 15, 2022: Deadline for filing personal income tax returns for taxpayers who live and work outside the United States and Puerto Rico as of April 18, 2022. This also applies if you are on military assignment outside the United States and Puerto Rico.
Companies subject to corporation tax, self-employed individuals, independent workers, and partners in partnerships subject to income tax must pay their second income tax installment for 2022.
September 15, 2022: deadline for filing income tax returns for companies subject to personal income tax whose financial year ends on December 31 and who have requested an extension.
Companies subject to corporation tax, self-employed individuals, independent workers, and partners in partnerships subject to income tax must pay their third installment of income tax for 2022.
October 17, 2022: Deadline for filing the personal income tax return, tax form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR as applicable, if you have requested an extension.
Companies subject to corporation tax whose financial year ends on December 31 and which have requested an extension must file their corporation tax returns.
December 15, 2022: deadline for payment of the fourth corporate tax installment for companies whose financial year ends on December 31.
January 16, 2023: Deadline for payment of the fourth installment of 2022 income tax for self-employed individuals, independent workers, and partners in partnerships subject to income tax.
Most states align their tax deadlines with those of the federal tax administration (IRS).
