THE BENEFITS OF E-FILING

Some of the benefits of IRS e-file are as follows:

  • Your tax return will have fewer errors than if you prepare it on paper. This is because the software program will flag most common errors.
  • The e-file system often detects common errors. If the errors are serious, it will reject your tax return, sending it back to you for correction.
  • The IRS usually sends within hours an official acknowledgement that your return was received.

E-FILING OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR INDIVIDUALS

The IRS works in partnership with several leading tax return preparation software developers (the Free File Alliance) to help you prepare your tax return online and to file it free of charge. They offer you two ways to prepare and file your tax return.

If you are an individual taxpayer, you can file electronically your tax return with the federal tax agency in two ways:

IRS Free File Program

This is a guided way to prepare your tax return at an IRS partner site. You begin your filing option at IRS.gov and follow these steps:

  • Choose the guided tax preparation option. You will be directed to the IRS partner’s website with the options to create or log into your account.
  • Create/log into your account: if you’re a returning user, you’ll be directed to log into your account. If you’re a new user, you’ll be directed to create a new account.
  • Prepare and e-file your federal tax return.
  • Receive a notification by email when the IRS has accepted your tax return.

Note: if you initiate the return preparation process directly from the IRS partner’s website, you may be charged.

Free Fillable Forms

This is a non-guided way to prepare your tax return using electronic federal tax forms equivalent to a paper 1040 form. That means you should know how to prepare your own tax return. If needed, you may use resources that the IRS made available to you: form instructions, IRS publications.

RESOURCES THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP YOU PREPARE YOUR TAX RETURN

If you qualify, you may use the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program or the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program for free basic tax return preparation. IRS partners operate VITA centers across the country. The centers are typically staffed by volunteers who want to make a difference in their communities.

The IRS VITA program

If you need assistance in preparing your own tax returns, your local VITA site may help. For more than 50 years VITA volunteers have been helping prepare millions of tax returns at thousands of tax sites across the country.

To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You generally make $60,000 or less per year;
  • You’re disable; and
  • You have limited English-speaking commend.

The TCE Program

The TCE program offers free tax help on questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors.

To qualify for the TCE program, you must be 60 years of age and older.

Commercial software

You may use a commercial software program to prepare your tax return and transmit it through IRS approved electronic channels. The software program uses a question-and-answer format that makes preparing your tax return easier.

In addition, your refund will be processed faster if you choose direct deposit in addition to e-filing your tax return.

E-FILING OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR BUSINESSES AND SELF-EMPLOYED

You may e-file your business tax returns with the IRS in two ways:

  • Through providers that are authorized to participate in the IRS e-file program.

Example: you use approved software and or a tax professional who is an Authorized IRS e-file Provider. For payroll taxes e-filing for instance, you may use Authorized IRS e-file Providers known as Reporting Agents, Software Developers, Transmitters, Electronic Return Originators (EROs), 94x On-Line Filing Providers and 94x On-Line e-Filers (IRS Authorized Signers) who want to participate in the electronic filing programs for 94x Forms Family.

  • By yourself if you’re a large taxpayer that is authorized to participate in the IRS e-file program.

Each fiscal year, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) processes hundreds of millions of tax returns and other forms. Individual and business income tax returns and employment tax returns account for more than two returns and forms out of three filed with the Federal tax agency. And those returns and forms are mostly filed electronically with the federal tax agency. Paid preparers file dozens of millions of individual income tax returns electronically. Taxpayers file about five million returns using the IRS Free File program.
