We would like to recommend that you gather your tax information, get copy of any missing documents before you go to a tax professional to help prepare your tax return. The more organized your records and information in hand, the fewer errors you will make on your return, and the smoother your filing experience will be.
To assist you further, the team at Aimlon Certified Public Accountants P.C. compiled the following list of information that you may need depending on your personal tax situation.
All taxpayers
1. Copy of your identification documents. This is typically a valid U.S. state driver’s license.
> If you’re a U.S. national and don’t have a state driver’s license, copy of your U.S. passport.
> If you’re a foreign national with no U.S. state driver’s license, copy of your passport and visa, or copy of your green card.
2. Copy of your U.S. social security card.
3. Copy of the U.S. social security card of everyone else listed on the tax return: children, spouse, other dependents. > Copy of your ITIN letter if you or anyone else listed on the tax return cannot have a U.S. social security card.
4. Copy of a voided check for the direct deposit or the payment of the balance due on the tax return.
5. Copy of a preprinted bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit or the payment of the balance due on the tax return if you don’t have a checkbook.
6. Copy of the IRS Letter 6475, Your 2021 Economic Impact Payment, to determine eligibility to claim the recovery rebate credit.
7. Copy of IRS Letter 6419, 2021 Total Advance Child Tax Credit Payments to reconcile advance child tax credit payments.
8. Copy of Form 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B from your brokerage firm, your banks, or any other issuing agencies.
9. Copy of an itemized list of your bank accounts outside of the United States if they exceed ten thousand dollars at any time during the year.
10. Copy of an itemized list of your tax-deductible expenses such as real estate property tax, Form 1098 – Mortgage Interest Statement, Form 1098-T Tuition Statement, health insurance premium paid, health insurance expenses.
11. Copy of your Form 1095-A, Health insurance marketplace statement.
12. Copy of documents to support claiming other credits or deductions such as receipts for child or dependent care, college expenses, donations to charitable organizations.
W-2 employees and w-2 employees of the gig economy
Copy of your Form(s) w-2 from your employer(s)
Self-employed and self-employed of the gig economy workers
Copy of your 1099-K, 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC
Unemployed taxpayers who received unemployment compensation benefits
Copy of your 1099-G
Retirees
Copy of your 1099-R, Distributions from a pension, annuity, or retirement plan.
Landlords
Copy of a profit & loss account statement for your rental business in an Excel format.
Shareholders of an S Corporation
Copy of your Schedule K-1.
Members of a partnership, an LLC taxed as a partnership
Copy of your Schedule K-1.
You should receive your tax documents such as w-2, 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B, 1099-R by the end of January. You should receive your schedule K-1s by March 15th if the company’s year-end is December 31. There are several possibilities:
- If you’re missing any document, you should contact your employer and other payer or issuing agency and request the missing documents.
- If you received a copy of your w-2, your 1099 but there are errors, you should contact your employer and other payer or issuing agency and request the errors be fixed.
- If you still cannot get the tax documents that you need after reaching out to your employer and other payer or issuing agency, you may use Form 4852, Substitute for Form w-2, Wage and Tax Statement, or Form 1099-R, Distributions from Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRAs, Insurance Contracts, etc.
- If you don’t receive the missing or corrected tax documents in time to file your tax return, you may estimate the wages or payments that was made to you as well as any taxes withheld. You can use Form 4852 to report this information on your federal tax return.
