France posts a record number of companies creations in 2021.
In 2021, close to 1 million French people applied to start new businesses, which is a 17% increase compared to 2020. France has already experienced a record number of business creations in 2020.
Overall, in 2021 the number of business creations is about 80% higher than the number of businesses created on average during the period 2010 -2017. France also enjoyed in 2021 the highest number of company incorporations compared to the number of incorporations over the past ten years.

A breakdown of the new business creations is as follows:
- Micro-enterprises: +17%.
- Company creations: +24%.
- Sole-proprietorships other than micro-entrepreneurs: +2%.
Types of industry
The French national institute of statistics and economic studies (INSEE) provides the following breakdown of the new business creations by industry:
- Travel, transportation, and logistics including warehousing, shipping and delivery;
- Services industry including public relations & communication, design, scientific and technical activities subsectors;
- Other services including coaching, naturopathy.
Geographic areas
The new entrepreneurs favor the following geographic areas:
- Ile-de-France: 23,400 additional businesses started in 2021
- Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur: 20,800 additional businesses started in 2021
- Occitanie: 15,000 additional businesses started in 2021
France’s overseas regions and territories also experienced a robust growth:
- French Guiana: +50% more businesses created
- La Mayotte: +33%
- La Martinique: +32%
- La Réunion (Reunion Island): +27%
- La Guadeloupe: +19%.
The profile of the entrepreneurs
Women account for 41% of sole proprietorships and incorporated businesses with one owner started in 2021, up from 39% in 2020. Men start their business predominantly in the construction, transportation & warehousing, and the information & communication sectors.
Young entrepreneurs under 30 account for four new sole proprietorships and incorporated businesses with one owner out of ten created in 2021.
